The Vice President, Tissue Operations must be dedicated to supporting the mission of Donor Network West to save and improve lives through organ and tissue donation for transplantation and research. This position is responsible to provide executive leadership in the development and strategic and operational plans for Tissue Recovery, Tissue Operations, Donation Program Development (non-hospital development) and other assigned departments which will promote the execution of organizational goals, and the development and retention of staff. As a member of the Executive Team, this individual actively fosters an organizational culture that is based on collaboration, performance improvement and accountability.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (*Denotes essential job function)
Provides leadership and direction to Donor Network West Tissue Donation Services departments to ensure high quality practices, communications, protocols, and service delivery standards to the hospital, public, tissue processor and tissue transplant communities.
Oversees the following functions:
Donor Evaluation, Management, Tissue Allocation and Recovery: In conjunction with the Tissue Medical Director, Tissue Recovery Services and Tissue Operations Management and Organ Services, oversees all clinical, allocation and recovery services activities to ensure clinical practices are sound and promote the maximization of donor gifts. Monitors effectiveness of tissue operations activities.
Authorization and conversion rates: In conjunction with the Tissue Operations Management and Family Services department leadership, oversees strategies that maximize authorization rates and ensures that Donor Network West provides excellent family care during and after the donation discussion. Implements strategies that enhance the effectiveness of the donation discussion..
Oversees Donation Program Development (non-hospital development, i.e.: Coroner/Medical Examiner, Funeral Home and Hospice) relationships by providing management and guidance. Collaborates with coroner/medical examiner offices and funeral homes to facilitate increased organ and tissue donors.
Tissue Processor Relations: In conjunction with Donor Network West’s Tissue Recovery Services and Tissue Operations Management, serves as a liaison and promotes communication and satisfaction among Tissue Processors partnered with Donor Network West. Monitors Donor Network West’s compliance with Tissue Processor contracts.
Data Analysis and Reporting: In conjunction with the VP of Quality, Directors of Family Services, Tissue Recovery Services and Tissue Operations Management, develops and designs systems and mechanisms for standardized reporting and analysis of performance standards. Through occurrence handling system, identifies trends, oversees the implementation of needed change and leads performance improvement initiatives.
Policy Oversight: Oversees implementation of policies of the Donor Network West including compliance with all current federal, state, and/or local laws and regulations, including those of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), state and local regulations, standards, and Donor Network West’s SOP manual. Policy scope includes tissue screening and eligibility, donor coordination, tissue allocation, and tissue recovery services and documentation activities. Leads the development of new policies and procedures necessary to maintain compliance or promote improved performance of Donor Network West’s tissue operations.
Regulatory Compliance: Ensures Donor Network West meets AATB accreditation standards and CA state licensure requirements. Interacts with the Quality Systems Department to ensure monitoring activities related to tissue recovery, including a documented annual internal review/audit to ensure compliance with SOP manual. Provides information and support for functions of Donor Information Department to ensure that tissue charts are reviewed and released in a manner and timeframe conducive to maintain the highest standards of practice and regulatory compliance.
Works with VP of Quality Systems to review and define parameters for tissue operations and recovery procedures that are in line with processor and regulatory standards.
Serves as a member of Donor Network West executive leadership team in order to provide strategic direction in the achievement of business goals and objectives, and promote integration between functions/departments. Ensures communication to tissue management team to synchronize strategy, priority and operations consistent with Executive Management directives and to managers to deliver strategy, plan and goals for their specific areas of operations.
Manages the business aspect of Tissue Program including annual budget development and management to ensure responsible control over utilization of Donor Network West Analyzes the efficiency of work systems. Looks for opportunities to reduce cost while maintaining or enhancing effectiveness. Negotiates and enters into contracts with vendors as defined by policy.
Provides oversight to the development of 24/7 call schedules for tissue operations and Donation Partner Development to ensure adequate staffing levels are maintained. This includes frontline staff and administrative oversight.
Ensures clinical competency of staff via management team through a variety of methods including: orientation, continuing education, case reviews, on-site evaluations and focused training in-services.
Responsible for hiring, coaching mentoring and performance management of direct reports
Actively participates in Medical Advisory Board activities and takes lead in specific sub committees when requested.
Defines personal and professional goals, develops and implements a written plan, with support of Executive Management to achieve these goals. Continuously seeks opportunities to improve job performance.
Creates and fosters positive professional relationships for enhanced collaboration with Donor Network West employees, customers, partners and stakeholders. Required: Bachelors Degree
Preferred: Masters Degree

Preferred: 8 years in an tissue procurement organization
